Before the Movies, There Were Books.
I’ve been creating stories for as long as I can remember. Even as a child, I was always coming up with characters, inventing situations, and convincing my classmates to take part in plays and little “movies” I would make up on the spot. I suppose I was already directing before I even knew what directing meant.
As I grew older, those imaginary worlds began finding their way onto paper. Some of the stories I wrote when I was younger would eventually become part of Haunting Symphonies: Tales from the Umbral. But the character who stayed with me the longest was Arnie Watson. I created him as a teenager, filling handwritten pages with his story. Unfortunately, somewhere between moving from one home to another, those pages disappeared. I lost the manuscript, but I never quite forgot Arnie.
Years later, I decided to revisit his story and write down whatever I could still remember. Of course, I wasn't the same person who had first imagined him, and the story had changed along with me. What began as an attempt to recover something from my teenage years eventually became Permanent Ink, my debut novel.
Looking back, I find something rather beautiful about that. A character I created as a teenager stayed with me long enough to become my first published novel. And although my storytelling has since expanded into screenwriting, books will always hold a special place in my heart. After all, that's where everything began.
